We sell one of the tools on this list. Read it for the reasoning rather than the ordering, and hold us to the same standard we hold the category to: no claims about mechanics nobody outside a vendor can see, and no pricing, because it would be wrong within a quarter. Where we cannot verify something about a competitor's product, this page says so instead of guessing. The same discipline is set out in what we do not do.
The split that decides your shortlist
Every tool here answers some version of "do AI answers mention us". They divide on what happens next. **Monitoring tools** tell you the number and track it over time: which engines named you, in what position, alongside whom, citing what. That is genuinely useful and it is most of the category.
**Attribution tools** try to connect a change you made to a movement in that number. This is much harder, and it is where the category's honesty problem lives, because the number moves on its own. Engines change, competitors publish, the same prompt returns a different answer on a different day. A tool that shows a line going up after your work is not evidence that your work moved it.
If you need to report a number, buy a monitoring tool and buy the one with the best coverage of the engines your buyers use. If you need to prove the work caused the number, that is a measurement problem rather than a dashboard problem, and the shortlist is much shorter.
The specialists
- ProfoundThe most established name in the category and the one most often shortlisted first. Broad engine coverage and the deepest enterprise feature set of the specialists. If you are a large brand who needs the category's most complete monitoring product and budget is not the deciding factor, start here rather than with us.
- Peec AIEuropean-founded, aimed squarely at marketing teams who want the visibility number and the competitive context without enterprise onboarding. Well regarded for how quickly it gets to a usable dashboard.
- Otterly AIOne of the earlier entrants, focused on tracking brand mentions and links across AI search. A reasonable pick when the job is straightforward monitoring rather than analysis.
- Scrunch AIPositions around how brands appear to AI agents as well as in answers, which is a broader framing than pure answer tracking and will matter more if agentic browsing keeps growing.
- RankscaleTracks visibility across ChatGPT and AI Overviews with an emphasis on the audit side. Frequently appears on page one for the category's own keywords, which is a reasonable signal that the team understands the channel they sell into.
The SEO platforms, adding it on
- Semrush and AhrefsBoth now ship AI visibility features, and Ahrefs offers a free checker. If you already pay one of them, start there before buying anything: the marginal cost is zero and it may be sufficient. We have written separately about running Rankelle alongside Semrush and alongside Ahrefs, because for most teams the answer is both rather than either.
- Conductor and LumarEnterprise SEO platforms with AI visibility layered onto existing site intelligence. The right shape when AI visibility is one line in a much larger technical SEO programme and procurement prefers one vendor.
- AI Clicks and the single-purpose trackersA group of small, focused tools covering AI Overviews specifically. Cheap, narrow, and often the correct answer when Google AI Overviews is the only surface you care about. Our own page on tracking Google AI Overviews explains what that surface can and cannot tell you.
Where Rankelle fits, and where it does not
Rankelle measures AI visibility as part of a product built around a different question: did the change you shipped actually do anything. The ledger records a verdict for every fix against a control set of comparable pages you did not touch, and it publishes `NO_EFFECT` and `REGRESSED` beside the wins. AI visibility joined that model rather than being sold separately.
So pick us if the recurring argument in your team or with your client is whether the work is producing results, and you would rather have an answer that sometimes says no. Pick a specialist if what you need is the best possible coverage of AI answers and you are not trying to attribute movement to your own changes.
And a limitation worth stating before you evaluate us: measuring AI visibility costs money per answer, so nobody in this category samples continuously. Everyone, us included, buys a sample of answers on a schedule. A number from any tool here describes the answers that tool bought on the days it asked, which is why prompt set design matters more than dashboard polish.
Two different purchases
Most disappointment in this category comes from buying one and needing the other.
You need monitoring
- The deliverable is a number in a report or a deck.
- Coverage breadth across engines matters most.
- Someone senior asks how visible the brand is in AI answers.
- Buy the specialist with the best coverage of your engines.
You need attribution
- The recurring question is whether the work is paying off.
- A number that only goes up is not believed, internally or by the client.
- You ship changes continuously and need to know which ones mattered.
- Buy on measurement method, and check what the tool does when a change fails.
Five questions worth asking every vendor here
- How many answers do you actually buy, and how often?Every tool samples. The honest ones will tell you the sampling rate, because it determines how much of what you see is noise.
- What does the product do when my number goes down?A dashboard that only frames improvements has made a product decision about what you are allowed to learn.
- Which engines, and how do you handle it when one changes?Answer surfaces change without notice. Ask what happened the last time one did.
- Do you claim a causal link between my changes and the number? If yes, ask how it is established. The measurement problem here is real and a confident answer without a control is a marketing claim.
- Can I see a report where the work did not succeed? The most informative question in the category, and the one fewest vendors can answer with an artefact.
Common questions
What is an AI visibility tool?
Software that asks AI answer engines a set of questions on a schedule and records whether your brand is named, in what position, alongside which competitors, and citing which sources. It measures presence in AI answers the way a rank tracker measures presence in search results.
Do I need one if I already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs?
Possibly not. Both ship AI visibility features and Ahrefs has a free checker, so use what you already have before adding a tool. A specialist earns its place when you need deeper engine coverage, larger prompt sets, or a measurement method the suites do not attempt.
Which AI visibility tool is most accurate?
Nobody can answer that honestly, including us, because there is no ground truth to check against. Engines return different answers to the same prompt on the same day. What differs between tools is sampling rate, engine coverage and how each one handles that variance, so ask about method rather than accuracy.
Can any tool make ChatGPT recommend my brand?
No, and treat any product implying otherwise with suspicion. These tools measure. What moves an answer engine is not visible from outside it, which is why our engine pages describe only what an engine does to a user and what we have observed in our own runs.
How is AI visibility different from GEO or AEO?
GEO and AEO are names for the practice of trying to appear in AI answers. AI visibility is the measurement of whether you do. One is the work and the other is the scoreboard, and the terms get used interchangeably in ways that confuse evaluations.
