AI Overviews are built from the same index as the ten blue links, which is the single most useful thing to know. A page Google cannot crawl, or has chosen not to index, cannot be cited. A page that ranks on page four for the query is very rarely cited. Almost everything that helps is therefore ordinary search work, done properly.
What follows is in order of how much evidence sits behind it. The first three items are Google's own documentation; the rest is what is consistently observed and honestly labelled as observation.
In order of evidence
- Be indexableNo noindex, no robots block, no canonical pointing elsewhere. This sounds too basic to list and it is the most common reason a page that should be cited is not.
- Rank for the query in ordinary resultsCited pages are overwhelmingly drawn from the top results for the query or a close variant. If you are not in the top ten, the work is the same work as ranking: the AI Overview follows rather than leads.
- Answer the question in the first screenThe overview is composed from passages. A page that states the answer in its first two hundred words, in plain sentences under a heading that matches the question, gives the model a passage to lift. A page that builds to the answer over a thousand words does not.
- Say what things are, not only what they doDefinitions, comparisons and numbered steps are the passage shapes that get quoted. This is why a glossary and how-to pages exist on this site, and it is not an accident.
- Measure before and after, with the caveatsSearch Console does not separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary ones, so you cannot read the effect off a chart. The only honest measurement is asking the questions yourself, on a schedule, and treating a citation rate over weeks as the metric.
Nothing on this page guarantees a citation, and anyone who says their method does has not measured it against a control. Overviews change from week to week for the same query with no change on your side. That is why the measurement is a rate over a fixed question set and not a screenshot.
Questions people ask
Does structured data get a page into AI Overviews?
There is no documented link between schema markup and being cited. Structured data helps a machine understand what a page is, which does not hurt, but treating it as an AI Overviews lever is a claim without evidence behind it.
Should I block Google's AI crawler and keep the ordinary one?
Google-Extended controls use in training Gemini models; it does not affect whether a page appears in Search or in AI Overviews, which use the ordinary Googlebot crawl. Blocking Googlebot removes you from both. Decide on training separately from visibility, because they are separate switches.
Is GEO a different discipline from this?
Mostly not. GEO vs SEO sets out what actually differs, and it is smaller than the new acronym implies: the page has to be crawlable, clear and already ranked, and the measurement is different because there is no click to count.
